How to Manage Your WordPress eCommerce Store

The following processes involve adding and managing products within the backend of your website. We’ll be utilising WooCommerce, which encompasses most aspects of store management.

Step 1

Managing Existing products:

  • To begin, navigate to the “Products” section in the backend menu of your website.
  • Click on “Products” to access the list of imported products on your site. Here, you’ll find various product details like images, stock levels, prices, categories and tags.
  • Choose a product to edit by either clicking on the “Edit” link below it or on the product title itself.

Step 2

Editing product details:

  • On the product screen, you can modify the title and permalink (URL) if needed. The permalink is typically generated automatically based on the product name.
  • Edit the product description as desired, adjusting paragraph spacing and adding images by clicking on “Media” and selecting from the library or uploading from your computer.
  • Formatting may be necessary to improve the appearance of the description. However, the default formatting from the import will generally suffice.

Step 3

Additional settings:

  • Some optional settings can be minimised for now.
  • Further down the page, you’ll find SEO settings for the product. These settings allow you to optimise the product page for specific keywords, but it’s not necessary to do this for every product unless you have the time and it’s a high priority.
  • You can also modify the snippet that appears on Google search results to enhance the user’s understanding of the product before clicking on it.

Step 4

Product data:

  • Scroll down to the product data section. You can minimise other areas to avoid confusion.
  • If the product has variations, click on the “Variations” tab to view and modify details like SKU, price, stock levels, etc. for each variation.
  • Other settings like attributes and advanced options may not be relevant for all products.

Step 5

Short description and categorisation:

  • The short description appears on category pages where multiple products are displayed simultaneously. You can make it shorter to avoid excessive text or leave it as the full description.
  • Choose the appropriate category and add relevant tags. Tags usually reflect the product name.
  • Set the main product image and additional gallery images, if applicable.

Step 6

Saving and updating:

  • Before saving changes, remember to review and ensure everything is as desired.
  • Click “Update” to save the edited product. If you’re not ready to save yet, you can navigate back to the “All Products” screen without saving.

Step 7

Adding a new product:

  • To add a new product, go to the “Products” section in the backend menu and select “Add New.”
  • Provide a name and description for the product (Skip template and SEO settings for now).
  • Focus on the product data section, where you can define attributes, variations and other relevant information.
  • Set the stock levels, shipping details and linked products (upsells and cross-sells) if applicable.
  • Publish the new product, ensuring it is categorised correctly and all details are accurate.

Step 8

Reviewing the new product:

  • Open the new product in a separate tab to check its appearance.
  • Verify the product’s title, short description, and full description.
  • Ensure that variations, stock levels and pricing are correctly displayed.
  • Make any necessary adjustments, such as updating stock levels and save the changes.
